Damen Ave | North Center
Shortly after purchasing their new condominium in Chicago’s North Center neighborhood, the homeowners engaged Toale Interiors to transform the builder-grade interiors into a warm, sophisticated, and thoughtfully curated home. While the existing layout offered an ideal foundation, the design focused on elevating the finishes, introducing rich textures, and creating spaces that balanced everyday functionality with a refined aesthetic.
The main living area lacked a dedicated dining space. By utilizing an underused nook adjacent to the fireplace, we introduced a custom banquette and oval dining table, creating an intimate setting for dining, entertaining, or simply relaxing. Warm saddle leather, natural quartz, and rich velvet upholstery bring depth and texture to the space, establishing a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere.
Throughout the living areas, the walls were enveloped in a richly textured grasscloth wallcovering, complemented by substantial plantation shutters that lend a sense of permanence and architectural character. In the kitchen, subtle but impactful updates transformed the original builder-grade finishes. Refined hardware, reeded glass cabinet inserts, and new pendant lighting introduced a more considered and cohesive aesthetic.
The transformation extended throughout the residence with updated lighting, a fresh palette of paint across the walls and trim, and thoughtfully selected door hardware. A fully furnished rooftop retreat completed the project, extending the home's living space outdoors and providing an inviting setting for both entertaining and quiet moments.
Rather than altering an already successful floor plan, the design focused on the power of materiality, craftsmanship, and thoughtful detailing. The result is a home that feels substantial, layered, and distinctly personal—an elevated interpretation of contemporary living that prioritizes warmth, sophistication, and enduring quality.
